There are a lot of website hosting options and I know you are wondering which you should choose. I mean, why else would you be reading this? Well, let me see if I can help a bit. Here are a few things to keep in mind:
- Don’t use just any hosting company. They are not all equal, in fact, some are very poor in quality.
- Don’t shop just by price, consider other things like speed, system quality, location and whatnot.
- The company that is great for domain names is often terrible for hosting (wink wink, you know who I’m talking about here, this is my way of not getting sued, pretty clever huh 🙂 )
There are several different types of hosting out there, but for most smaller websites you will be looking at getting shared hosting. Some shared hosting accounts are great, but honestly most are a little slow. You are usually going to pay between $6 and $10 a month for these accounts.
If you are really serious, you might look into a Virtual Private Server, which is a cloud based server that dedicats resources to your hosting account so that it will run much faster than shared hosting. For a VPS account you are usually looking at paying about $50 a month.
I know, there is a big cost difference between shared hosting and virtual private hosting, and if you are smart (and if you are reading this clearly you are) you are wondering if the cost difference is worth it. Honestly, it probably isn’t. But, there is some middle ground (and here is the pitch for what we offer, sorry but its good stuff).
We offer hosting to our clients on our VPS, which means that we have dedicated resources for the 50 or so sites that we host there, meaning our client’s sites still run really fast. What does this cost you ask? $150 a year. A little more than slower shared hosting and not nearly as much as getting your own VPS.
Here is a little comparison we created with a clients website, you can see the speed results for yourself:
