The Blog

I used to be a website designer

Desk with an iMac showing code and a web page, a second monitor with a mountain photo, and a lamp, in a dark room

I was thinking the other day about how when Aaron and I started Sideways8 I was our designer and Aaron was our developer. I was also our business development person, admin person, HR person, etc. And, Aaron was also our support person, quality assurance testing person, admin person, etc.

I think what is great about where we started is how it affects our role today. Because I used to code websites, I can talk to our developers about how to approach a project, helping to make sure its right from start to finish. And, because I used to design websites, I can work with our designers to set the strategy for a project and guide the storytelling process. The same goes for Aaron as well.

Our background across disciplines makes our work better today. I’m thankful that I don’t design or code anymore, Sideways8 grew beyond my capabilities a long time ago, but I’m grateful that I understand, and can speak to, the process today.
