We talk a lot about custom WordPress development  on our blog. We haven’t  talked about it in a while, though. So I thought it was time to revisit the subject and ask why. Why are we passionate about custom WordPress development? Why not just stick to prefab themes (templates) and existing plugins?
Let’s talk about this one piece at a time. First, when people come to us they are typically already beyond needing a prefab WordPress theme or template. The people that we usually talk to are businesses that are ready to have a website that is the anchor point for their marketing. They need a website that fits their needs completely. A prefab theme can’t do that. I think that prefab themes are great for small startups, non-profits and companies that have a limited budget for marketing. However, for companies that are ready to really stand out from the crowd and want a complete marketing solution, custom WordPress development is best.

Second, existing plugins are often lacking. Don’t get me wrong here, there are some great WordPress plugins out there. We have been known to use many of them. But, when an organization needs to rely on a plugin for some critical site functionality that will really effect their business, going with a custom plugin is often better. A custom plugin will be supported and up to date. And, a custom plugin will fit the organization perfectly rather than shoving them into a prefab system. Prefab plugins have the same drawbacks as prefab themes. Sometimes they work great. Often they are limiting.

So what is custom WordPress development to us? It is working in partnership with a company. Understanding who they are, where they are headed, who their clients are, and how the website is going to help them meet their goals. It is creating a custom look and functionality to tell their story and lead website users down the right paths.
